Writtle University College - Clay Shooting Club

Updated: Apr 18, 2024

I have been working to re-establish the WUC university clay shooting team (Now known as ARU Writtle).

The first hurdle was finding the keys for the container where the club stored its equipment, and took weeks of tracking people down to find who had them.

We started by clearing the brambles, nettles and filling in a few of the rabbit holes. One of students helped to rebuild the two shooting stands using wood from the college farm.

There were 3 single stack Promatic clay traps in the container. One that worked, one that was temperamental and one that was beyond repair. So not an ideal start to creating a training area.

I decided to bring my Promatic Harrier XTS from the farm and lend it to the club long term.

We are now a year and a half in and the club is going from strength to strength and now does weekly training either at the college or at Essex Shooting Ground (Fyfield). The club is also excited to put its first team in to the BUSC competition at the end of 2024.

The club is still extremely short of equipment and funding but we will continue to build and are excited to introduce even more students to clay pigeon shooting.
